Recovering Health Through Power Of Food

Image
We tend to take our health for granted. Sometimes a jolt is all that needs to set us rethinking and bring about desired changes in our lifestyle with happy outcomes. My annual medical check-up on February 9, 2019, was one such jolt as it showed that I was not as fit as I thought myself to be. My triglycerides level was 226, HDL (good cholesterol) was mere 32, blood pressure was 86-130 and I had Fatty Liver(fat builds up) Grade II, besides some thyroid issues. The deterioration in health was apparent as, way back in 2005, my Fatty Liver had been Grade I, but had since degenerated to Grade II. More alarming was the fact that my HbA1C was 6.0 making me prediabetic. The possibilities of becoming a diabetic were strong as I have a family history of diabetes. I have been on medication for high cholesterol/triglycerides since 1998 and high Blood pressure since 2003. When told that there is no medicine to check further degeneration of fatty liver, and that switching to Low Carbohydra...

IS INTERMITTENT FASTING DIFFICULT. NOT AT ALL.

When it is mentioned that all of us should restrict food intake to 8 hours in a day and fast for 16 hours, the impression created is that it must bee painful to be without food for as many 16 hours in a day. Normally that may be the view because most of us are habitual of having minimum three full meals and many a snacks in between every day, which does immense damage to our bodies. With the culture of very late dinner and even midnight snack, even the thought of not having food may look difficult. Not only that, there have been medical advice also that one should not miss meals and the result is tendency to have food virtually non-stop in our waking hours, all seven days in a week. Even I felt strange when this concept of intermittent fasting was mentioned to me about two months ago. But when one is introduced to fat based eating, technically called ketogenic diet, the difficulty totally disappears. What is suggested in the fat based diet is that more than 50 percent of your cal...

A well-wisher's advice for not skipping dinners.

It is good to have well-wishers and heed to their advice. When I wrote about intermittant fasting and restricting intake of food to 8 hours in a day and fast for 16 hours and showed how it benefits, a suggestion came that one should not skip dinners, possibly meaning that any meal should not be missed and missing a meal regularly can harm. I appreciate the suggestion and the spirit behind the suggestion but do not agree to it. Actually human body is not meant for three full meals in a day. If one goes into history of humankind, in times gone by, food was not available regularly. People were living in jungles and there was no concept of agriculture and people depending on hunting and eating what plants  gave. There was no regularity in food and there were long gaps when food was not available. Human body adjusted to this irregularity in food and made it survive non availability of food for long durations. Till 1970s people ate three times a day and slowly this culture of fre...

When I took my weight today and found it to be 69 KG I realised I have kept my promise to my wife 30 years back and I thank her for being able to do it.

Having a weighing machine at home has an advantage. It tells you what weight you have and whether it is in the range you expect it be in. Today morning when I took my weight, it showed 69 KG for the third day in continuation and I thought about the promise I had made to my wife 30 years ago, at the time of marriage that I will keep my weight around 70 KG. As all of us know maintaining reasonable weight for 30 years is not easy but in my case I am thankful to my wife who has helped me in keeping the weight to acceptable limits. She is a medical doctor and has been careful in the diet the family takes and has been observant for any signs any of us in the family show of not good health indicators. I remember my 1998 medical report indicated high triglyceride levels and I started prescription medicines for that. In 2003, when I was to go to Hotspring in Leh, my BP was slightly high and there I had to start BP medicines. Having a family history of diabetes, she noticed slightly elevat...

POSSIBILITY OF GAINING WEIGHT AGAIN.

A question has been raised that my diet amounts to less than 1000 calories, will there be not regain of weight when normal diet is resumed. This is a good question.  First of all, let me say that my diet consists of about 1000 calories is not correct. One gram of fat is about 9 calories. As I mentioned, in the morning food I take 2 table spoons of coconut oil, 2 table spoons of flaxseed oil and some ghee, this itself adds to about 80 grams of fats which is about 720 calories.  If you add other things, the two meals I take must be around 1800 to 2000 calories which I need in a day. By simple arithmetic my intake of food and energy used is somewhat equal now and there is no weight gain or weight loss at all.  The beauty of intermittent fasting and fat based diet is that one can continue on this diet regularly and there is no chance of regain of weight. The best part is that you do not feel hunger and you can continue on this diet. I have done it for more than 2 month...

DIET I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING written on 27th April, 2019.

Diet I follow. There were some questions as to what diet I follow to get remarkable health results.  Let me mention that there cannot be one diet suitable for everyone. I being vegetarian, my diet has to be different from those who take non-veg food. For illustration I am sharing diet I have followed, in last 2 months, with remarkable results for cholesterol reduction and reduction in BP for which I had been taking medicines for years. My day starts with 1. Green Juice at 6.3 0 in morning. This is juice made from Karela, Aonla, Chukandar, Lemon and Lauki. 2. One cup of tea, with milk and Gur(Jaggery), not sugar at around 7.30. 3. Food at 8.30. This consists of Dal, 2 Chapatis made of mixed grains and vegetables. I include 2 table spoons of coconut oil, 2 table spoons of flaxseed oil and some ghee. 4. Overnight soaked dry fruits and seasonal fruits. 5. Lunch with some rice and Dal and some vegetables. 6. Absolutely nothing after lunch, till next morning. This make...

REMARKABLE TURNAROUND IN HEALTH written on April 21, 2019.

Healthy habits have remarkable results. In two months, I could reduce my Triglycerides from 226 to 123, VLDL from 45,2 to 26 and Fasting Insulin from 10 to 7. Some people may remember that having had Cholesterol Medicines for more than 20 years and BP medicines for about 15 years, in 2018, after making dietary changes, I had left all medicines. Results were very good and I have been totally off medicines for more than one year. In February medical Tests my Triglycerides were  226 and VLDL 45.2. I was told to do Intermittent Fasting and Fat based diet to improve things further. I experimented with these and within 2 months I had dramatic reduction in Trigycerides from 226 to 123 and VLDL from 45.2 to 26, both in normal range and without any medicine. My fasting sugar was 85 and fasting Insulin 7. Of course my BP is normal, without medicines.Thought of sharing with people to confirm that dietary and lifestyle changes can get you outstanding health results and everyone can experimen...
